More than being a model, Gisele Bundchen interviews show a woman with strong personal convictions about women’s rights, the environment, and her dreams for the future, including bringing children into a world as beautiful as we know it now.

Not known for being a role model, Gisele Bundchen is tired of being ignored off the catwalk, this is a woman who plans to use her celeb status and money to make a difference, starting in Brazil where fresh water rivers are being polluted, and children denied an education.

Our favorite interviews with Gisele Bundchen however are where she talks about her eating habits, enjoying a cigarette, or a drink with friends. Behind the scenes Gisele Bundchen is no Barbie doll, in interviews Gisele talks of living her life, doing her own stunts, and other models can eat her dust, Gisele doesn’t diet.

Much of the controversy around Gisele has been described as over hyped by her management, and little long term effect has been noticed, Gisele still manages to attract some of the highest paid modeling contracts in the industry, and continues to represent many of the biggest fashion names.

Annie Liebovitz’s April 2008 Vogue cover of Gisele and LeBron James is the most recent to attract controversy and accusations of racism, although not directed at LeBron, but instead at the photographer, Gisele, and Vogue magazine for placing LeBron is a posture reminiscent of King Kong.

The accusation leveled against Gisele is of pandering to a white elitist niche by appearing to echo Fay Wray in the King Kong poster, and thus suggesting LeBron is being equated with a big ape, a stereotype often used by racists, but which Liebovitz, Gisele Bundchen, Vogue Magazine, and LeBron James all deny. Indeed, LeBron was the very first African-American male to feature on the cover of Vogue, something he has described as a great honor and a lot of fun to shoot.

Veja, Brazil’s highest circulation weekly tabloid published several articles in late 2007 alleging Gisele wasn’t prepared to accept payment in either Brazilian Reais, or US dollars at a time when global money markets were under pressure. Gisele’s sister Patricia, who is also her manager, was forced to rebut these accusations on Gisele’s official website.

Being known for her pride in being Brazilian, Gisele often appears in television commercials on Brazilian TV, and frequently champions Brazilian causes, so the allegation that she demanded to be paid in Euros for representing Pantene in Brazil caused a great deal of embarrassment. A similar accusation was published after Gisele agreed to work with Dolce & Gabbana globally to represent their new perfume The One.

Perhaps most upsetting for Gisele were the accusations that her environmental credentials were contradictory when PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) sabotaged the filming of the 2002 Victoria’s Secret Fashion show after Gisele had agreed to a contract with Blackglama, a fur farming organization.

Four PETA activists jumped onto the runway beside Gisele waving placards that read “Gisele: Fur Scum”. The protest had little to do with Victoria’s Secret and could have jeopardized her contract, but producers stopped the music, and after security had removed the PETA activists Gisele’s walk was re-filmed. Afterwards Gisele seemed to show little sympathy for PETA and their protest, and commented on CNN that the protest wasn’t appropriate because the fashion show only had faux fur outfits.

Later, after Gisele’s involvement with Blackglama was exposed to be the reason for the protest, Gisele publicly apologized, ended her contract with Blckglama, and declared that she no longer wears fur. She also stated she loves animals and hates seeing them hurt. “It was a bad decision on my part because I don’t wear fur and I understand their cause” she was reported saying after her apology.

Gisele Bundchen’s own dog, a Yorkshire terrier named Vida, is her constant companion when she is in the US, and when Vida went missing for a few days in 2004, Gisele offered a reward of $5,000 for his return. Fortunately, Vida was found safe and returned to Gisele, however the couple who returned Vida to Gisele were never paid.

In fact, the couple in question were later arrested by armed police officers after a tip off the couple had stolen Vida to extort money from Gisele. After questioning, police released the couple, apparently satisfied they had nothing to do with Vida’s disappearance, although they were still never offered the reward for Vida’s safe return.

Controversy surrounding the son of Gisele Bundchen’s husband Tom Brady hasn’t been too far from the limelight either, after Bridget Moynihan, the child’s mother has been reported to be upset that Gisele is flagrantly disregarding her wishes to keep her son away from the paparazzi. Gisele has inadvertently upset Moynihan several times, first when she was pregnant by sending a gift package of baby clothes from the ‘Supermodel’ brand.

More recently, Gisele has said in interviews with Vanity Fair that she sees young John Brady as her own son, “it’s not like because somebody else delivered him, that’s not my child”, and also “love him the same way as if he were mine and I already feel like he’s my son from the first day”. Bridget Moynihan has reportedly threatened to prevent her son seeing Gisele if more care avoiding paparazzi isn’t taken by Gisele and Tom.

HIV/AIDS is one of the causes Gisele has most actively got behind, in 2006 when she joined David Bowie, Sting, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lenny Kravitz, Richard Gere and many others in painting her face in front of the camera to declare solidarity with people in Africa who suffer this terrible debilitating disease. Organized by Keep a Child Alive, the photoshoot was published in several Conde Nast magazines such Vanity Fair, Vogue and GQ.

Earlier that year she had also been the face of the American Express Red Card, an initiative of Bono and Bobby Schriver who teamed with AMEX and their card holders to provide regular hassle free funding for HIV/AIDS by simply going about their normal business. A percentage of the profits raised by AMEX in offering the card was used to buy anti-retroviral medications for sufferers in Africa.

At the same time, Gisele agreed to a photoshoot with RED, the parent organization set up by Bono and Bobby Schriver, wearing clothing supplied by corporate backers of the project, and shown using or endorsing products supported by RED. The photoshoot was featured in Elle magazine globally, and Gisele appeared on the front covers of 20 Elle magazines internationally, and becoming the first model in history to appear on some many front covers simultaneously.

Other causes dear to Gisele’s heart include cancer research, a disease that Gisele has been unlucky enough to experience first hand, both of her grandmothers passed away from cancer, and Gisele is on record as a supporter of cancer research and the pink ribbon campaign.

In 2003, Gisele Bundchen worked with one of America’s top jewelry companies, Gumuchian Fils in association with Harper’s Bazaar, to design a platinum heart with six diamonds that was sold in limited quantities to raise funds in support of St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Gisele bought five, giving one each to her sisters.

In addition to her work with St Jude Cancer Research Hospital, Gisele has also been a spokeswoman for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, as well as their face in television commercials, and is credited with helping Saks Fifth Avenue contribute $6.1 million from record sales of products.

Supporting the hungry and starving in her native Brazil, Gisele stood alongside Brazil’s President Lula, during the 2003 Sao Paulo Fashion Week in aid of Zero Hunger, and handed over a check for $150,000 equivalent to a week of income for Brazil’s highest earning supermodel.

For the environment, Gisele Bundchen has been a long time supporter of protecting the Amazon rainforest and Brazil’s fresh water rivers, to the extent that her own website is primarily geared towards promoting various projects being funded by Gisele, or supported by her such as recycling in the home.

Her wealth and popularity have been credited with making a small difference in Brazil, Gisele set up the Agua Limpa foundation in association with several Brazilian government agencies. Projects such as these are raising awareness amongst Brazilians of the preciousness of their natural resources, and Gisele regularly appears on television talking about her aims.

Some of the funds received from the sale of Gisele’s line of footwear, Ipanema Gisele Bündchen, go toward supporting the Atlantic Forest, and Amazon Rainforest. Gisele has personally sponsored 15 hectares of new forest, known as Gisele Bundchen Sementes, which has been planted with over 25,000 new native trees on the Atlantic side of Brazil.

Reforestation, particularly to halt the spread of desertification is a project dear to Gisele’s heart, not just in Brazil, but also in neighboring countries and Central America. Gisele owns a house in Costa Rica near to a rainforest so that she can experience nature close at hand and promote cross border communication.

Most recently, Gisele was a featured celebrity in Tonic.com’s Hurricane Katrina fundraiser, along with other celebs such as Beyoncé, Cher, Ellen Degeneres and more who autographed a limited number of iPods which were then auctioned to raise funds for Music Rising, a music and cultural awareness charity in Louisiana.

Shortly after starting her career, Gisele got her first contract with Dolce & Gabbana, an association she has kept through her entire modeling career, and even today still works closely with the brand. After only a few years as a catwalk model Gisele had already climbed to the very top of modeling becoming one of the most recognizable names of recent years.

As expected, a model of Gisele’s caliber is always in great demand from major names on the fashion industry, and has been linked with Victoria’s Secret, Givenchy, Christian Dior, Valentino, Liouis Vuitton, Rampage, C&A, Max Factor and many other brands, in many cases as the face of the brand, or the lead model for specific campaigns.

Outside of the fashion industry Gisele has also endorsed American Express, Apple Inc, Volkswagen, A Swiss watch maker Ebel, and Duracell amongst others. Despite being discovered eating a McDonald’s burger, Gisele has never endorsed the brand, though she has privately confessed to enjoying a Big Mac, a fact that is often met with derision amongst other models, although Heidi Klum, the second highest earning supermodel has accepted an endorsement contract from the fast food chain.

Gisele Bundchen has consistently appeared on Forbes Top 15 List of Top Earning Models, and in 2009, 2008, 2007, and 2006 was ranked the highest earning Supermodel with total earnings over her career estimated at over $150 million, although this figure doesn’t take into account earnings from her early career, or earnings from Gisele’s investments, such as the hotel in Brazil she owns.

Gisele is also known to give a third of her earnings to her closest family members, so her total assets are substantially less, and with charitable donations estimated in the millions, Gisele is certainly comfortable, but unlikely to be worth as much as $150million.

A Brazilian shoe company, Grendene, founded in 1971, and now Brazil’s largest manufacturer of footwear have developed a range of flip flops and casual sandals in association with Gisele Bundchen who continues to model for the company as well as providing her name. Gisele’s first ad campaign with Grendene for her line of footwear featured Gisele wearing nothing but a dress made of water droplets which had been computer generated, and a skin toned bikini removed.

The agreement with Grendene was initially for only four years, but has since been extended in a series of two year contracts owing to Gisele’s sales power, and sees Gisele receive 7% of the sales price of each pair of shoes sold, and is estimated at 20% of Gisele’s annual earnings. Gisele’s sales power in the fashion industry is legendary, she is reputed to have helped C&A triple earnings during a campaign she fronted, and it is believed Grendene sell 20 million pairs of Gisele Bundchen branded sandals and flip flops.

Fred Fuld, an economist and expert on Brazilian stocks who wrote the best selling “Investing in Brazil Stocks” has compared the stocks of companies endorsed by Gisele Bündchen with other industry stocks, notably the Dow Jones Industrial Average. He noted that the Gisele Bundchen Stock Index frequently outperforms, for example during May and July of 2007 when it rose over 15%, in contrast with the DJIA which only rose 8%. At one point the Gisele Bundchen Stock Index rose 29% compared to the DJIA falling 6.5%.

Earnings per year are so consistent for Gisele, being one of the fashion world’s most well known brands, that Gisele Bundchen is known to juggle upto 20 contracts for product endorsements per year. So confident is Gisele of her future earnings that in 2007 she terminated a $5 million per year contract with Victoria’s Secret, reportedly over financing with some fashion insiders claiming Gisele has asked for $20 million.

Gisele’s manager and sister Patricia has denied this, saying instead that Gisele simply wanted to pursue other career goals and that Victoria’s Secret placed too many demands on her available time. As she approaches her 30th birthday Gisele is keen to transition out of modeling, and into contracts that don’t demand catwalk appearances.

A year later in 1994, while on a school trip to Sao Paulo, Gisele and her school friends, all of whom were wearing school uniforms, were spotted by a talent scout working for Elite in the food court of a shopping center. Gisele later confessed to eating a McDonald’s Big Mac when she was approached, saying that it was all she could afford.

Elite were looking for a new and exciting face that was different and would capture the imagination of the fashion industry, and in Gisele they found their new star. Later that year Gisele competed in her first modeling contest, Elite’s Look of the Year, and despite fierce competition from all over Brazil, Gisele closed second, earning her the right to enter the world competition in Ibiza, Spain, in which she finished fourth.

The success Gisele enjoyed at the Look of the Year competitions inspired her to relocate to New York at the age of 16, where she quickly found work during fashion week, leading to Milan and Paris working the runway for Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, and Giorgio Armani.

Several years of walking the runway at various high profile fashion shows perfected Gisele’s often commented on walk, and cemented her reputation as a hard working model. Gisele gained a reputation for being easy to work with, and became a favorite for many top designers.

August 1998, and the front cover a Britain’s Vogue magazine was the beginning of Gisele’s modeling career superstardom. By December she scooped the cover of i-D, and by January of 1999 appeared on the front cover of W magazine, and later the same year featured on the covers of Harper’s Bazaar, and the British and French Vogue magazines.

In the same year Gisele Bundchen star had risen so far she was called on to open for Carolina Herrera and Yves Saint Laurent in their Spring Paris and New York shows, and also closes for Prada, Valentino, and Calvin Klein in New York, Paris, and Milan.

Gisele’s body shape became the topic of several articles and news stories in 1999, particularly after Vogue magazine described her in the context of the return of the sexy model, and in complete contrast to the waif like models of previous years. By the middle of 2000, Rolling Stone magazine had crowned Gisele the most beautiful woman in the world. Gisele’s proportions are 34-24-24 and she is 5 feet 11 inches tall.

In 2000, Gisele signed a contract with Victoria’s Secret becoming one of their top models, and in 2003 became the face of Christian Dior. By 2005 her celebrity model status had catapulted Gisele to the very top of the supermodel world, being one of the most recognized models, and one of the highest earning. In the following year Gisele Bundchen became the face of Louis Vuitton, and the face of Vogue’s eyewear division featuring in a photoshoot that headlined as “Gisele plays with Vogue”.

After several years with Elite, Gisele signed with IMG Model Management in 2000, a strategic move that caused shock waves through the industry at the time. John Casablancas, CEO of Elite started legal proceedings against Gisele and several other models who defected, even resorting to name calling, notably when he described Gisele as a “monster of selfishness”, a charge Gisele’s friends all contradict, citing her willingness to share her income and fortune with her family.

Aside from modeling, Gisele has begun to develop an acting career, having appeared in Taxi (2004) playing the role of a bank robber, and then in 2006 playing a Vogue editor in the blockbuster film The Devil Wears Prada. Gisele has also appeared in a U2 video.

During her thirteen year career in modeling Gisele has appeared on the covers of almost every fashion magazine, and represented several of the major fashion, jewelry, and cosmetics houses. Vogue magazine referred to Gisele as the “return of the sexy model”, whilst Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer both agreed, in the 21st century, Gisele Bundchen is possibly the only supermodel.

She was born Gisele Caroline Bündchen on July 20th 1980 in a small town “Tres de Maio, in Horizontina of Southern Brazil to Vania Nonnenmacher and Valdir Bündchen, Brazilians of German descent, and is a practicing Roman Catholic. Gisele has described herself as a sixth generation Brazilian, and whilst she learned German at school, she considers Portuguese her native language.

Gisele has five sisters, and a fraternal twin named Patricia who is five minutes younger, and is Gisele’s closest confidante and manager. Three of her sisters are also aspiring models but none have managed to get the recognition that Gisele has.

As a child Gisele was considered a good volleyball player and had hoped to become a professional player, perhaps for the Brazilian national squad, the Sogipa, but fortunately for her fans she was discovered by modeling talent scouts before she could commit to volleyball training.

Most recently, on the 26th February 2009, Gisele married her boyfriend of three years,Tom Brady, a quarterback in the NFL’s New England Patriots. Tom proposed to Gisele in traditional style, simply bending on one knee and asking Gisele for her hand in marriage, in stark contrast to many Hollywood engagements that seem more about publicity than romance.

Gisele and Tom’s wedding was a small ceremony at Santa Monica Catholic Church with only family and the couple’s closest friends attending. Gisele was dressed from head to toe by Dolce & Gobbana. Tom Brady’s son to a former girlfriend Bridget Moynahan was also present, and was carried by Gisele to their waiting car after the ceremony.

Two months later in April 2009 Gisele and Tom re-anacted their wedding for the benefit of friends, team mates and other top models who hadn’t been invited to the closed wedding in California. The second wedding was held at an exclusive boutique hotel on Costa Rica’s Nicoya peninsula.

Gisele and Tom met shortly after his split from ex Bridget Moynihan, who announced two months later that she was pregnant. Gisele sent Bridget a gift pack of designer baby clothes after hearing the news, unfortunately one set of clothes bore the logo ‘SuperModel’. Paparazzi journalists widely reported this as a slap in the face to Bridget, whose acting career has suffered many setbacks.

Prior to dating and then marrying Brady, Gisele Bündchen has also dated Leonardo diCaprio, her longest relationship which ended after five years and precipitated rumors that Siena Miller, an actress who has supposedly earned the nickname “home wrecker” was responsible, though this is denied by diCaprio and Miller. Shortly after separating from diCaprio, Gisele was romantically linked with Kelly Slater, a world champion surfer. Slater and Bundchen dated for nearly a year.

So popular has Gisele become that Rolling Stone magazine named her the “Most Beautiful Woman in the World” in their September 2000 issue. In 2005 Gisele Bündchen living in New York was cited as the 43rd good reason out of 123 for people to love New York by New York magazine.

Her popularity has never waned, being repeatedly cited as an inspirational figure or beautiful celebrity that many people in the US identify as the person they’d most like to look like. Amongst hair stylists who read Elle Magazine, Gisele was voted in 2006 the celebrity with the best hair in Hollywood, and the most common request being to cut, color, and style a client’s hair to resemble her blonde locks.

Later, in February 2008, the “Breasts from Brazil” as Gisele has been nicknamed, came second in an international survey of celebrities most often mentioned by clients of cosmetic surgeons in the breasts category, though it is a testament to Gisele’s active lifestyle that she won the abdomen category, and it should come as no surprise she also won the hair category.

Such a muse has Gisele become, that a young singer from Brazil got his first big break after writing a glowing tribute to Gisele, a song named “Tributo a Gisele”, who he considered to be the 21st century’s Girl from Ipanema. Gabriel Guerro, and his friend Pedro Cezar, two struggling musicians collaborated on the recording at the instigation of one of Gisele’s backstage makeup artists, Lili Ferraz.

Gisele was so taken with the song she decided to use the song on her new website as her theme song. Shortly after the song appeared on Gisele’s website, recording company executives signed Gabriel to a multi album contract. In 2008 Gabriel Guerra and Gisele Bundchen finally met at the Copacabana Hotel for the January release of his third album.

Gisele loves animals, and has a pet dog named Vida, a small terrier that travels with her everywhere she goes, and in interviews she has said her dream is to own a large property in the countryside where she can have horses, as well all of the other animals that make a traditional farm.
